Novel proprietary selective metallization process delivers superior-performance solar energy rejection at a fraction of the cost of competing multilayer optical coating films
ENGLEWOOD, CO / ACCESS Newswire / November 4, 2026 / Lumenco Scientific, https://lumencoscientific.com/, today announced that it has filed a non-provisional U.S. patent application covering a new class of nanostructured solar-control films. The premium clarity, high performance, and low cost of the new film technology make it an ideal solution for architectural and automotive window glazing, with a strong secondary use case for enhancing smartphone screen protectors. A unique benefit of the new film is its “radiative cooling” capability – a feature not available on competing products. While other solar-control films trap interior heat, Lumenco Scientific’s new window film allows excessive heat inside a building or car to escape outward, even as the film blocks unwanted incoming solar heat.
With the initial patent filed, Lumenco Scientific is actively exploring opportunities for cooperation with potential licensees and manufacturing partners.
At the core of the patent filing is a proprietary nano selective-metallization process. Rather than depositing tens to hundreds of layers of continuous coatings, as is commonly required when manufacturing spectrally-selective films, Lumenco Scientific’s solution uses a single patterned layer of sub-wavelength nanostructures – rings, squares, and other geometries – that reflect solar near-infrared heat while allowing for clear transmission of visible light as well as the uninhibited transmission of cellular, GPS, and Wi-Fi signals.
Using the new technology, premium solar-control films will be manufactured at a fraction of the cost and complexity of conventional multilayer optical films. (Lumenco Scientific’s market analysis shows that the new film has a manufacturing cost that is 80% lower than that of competing products from major brands, which have similar, or even inferior, solar-control performance.) The technology delivers more than 63% total solar energy rejection with more than 60% visible light transmission.
“Everyone in solar control is fighting the same three-way trade-off between heat rejection, clarity, and cost,” said Mark Raymond, President of Lumenco Scientific. “By building the selectivity into the nanostructure itself, we achieve premium total solar energy rejection from a single layer of material. Using equipment that manufacturers already have on their floors, we can then tune the selectivity by simply changing the metal or the geometry. That combination is what the patent protects.”
